Along with Daniel Goleman and others, we view leadership as requiring highly developed levels of emotional intelligence rather than just technical expertise in some aspects of business or a track record of good performance in one or two functional areas.
We believe that the ability to lead others - in a team or an organisation or society as a whole - is rooted in an ability to "lead oneself". By that, we mean having a highly -developed sense of self-awareness and the capacity to manage one's own emotions, to motivate oneself and to develop and sustain a personal vision for one's life and work.
With those qualities in place, it is possible to be an excellent leader of others - without them; it is very hard to be so. Leading others requires other qualities too: empathy, organisational awareness, the capacity to inspire and influence others, a desire to develop others and to manage conflict being among them.
